Question: WHAT TYPES OF BAITS/RIGS CAN I USE FOR SALTWATER FISHING?

Answer #1:

ok black sea bass like the cheap cut bait you get from walmart ok it works very good last weekend we filled our live well and had to start using the coolers you want to have a 5oz weight and with your boat maby go about 17 to 15 miles off and find some structure like sunken ships or old army tanks and stuff there's tuns of them out there. and the bigger the bait is the bigger the fish you will catch the small fish will eat smaller bait before the bigger fish can get in and take it.

Answer #2:

You have a 14FT boat and want to go out MILES from shore in the ocean?

I'm going to mark your Q as interesting in the hopes that Wormist, GMB or Peter_AZ (who are all from Cali) can give you further info on fishing that region.

I may be wrong, but where I come from (East Coast), being Offshore in a 14Ft boat is asking for trouble.

Answer #3:

In that small of a boat, what hull design does it have for taking it out past any bay sounds dangerous to me.I have done almost 1 mile in a john boat but that was with experience and great water conditions only.I would say keep her in the bay with in the boundaries of true skinny water.

Rigs like the finder or knocker rigs will work fine for most fish you want but for bonito I would hit them with some iron or feather/hair jigs.Use a jig and strip bait or shrimp and cast it where you have good fish able area's working the bait through out the water column until you find fish.

A good rig you can try is on main line a egg slip sinker then to leader with a good swivel.Try using a fluorocarbon leader and then go with the jig or a circle hook baited. Also if you dont mind the looks you may get I use weighted cork slip rig just like panfishing.I have done very well with snapper, bass, trout, flounder and so on with this style.
